Selma, AL – Beyond the Bridge

Selma, ALPilgrimage to the South.

Last month, 50 years after the original Civil Rights marchers set out on that dreadful Sunday that would change the world, all eyes were once again on Selma, AL.

Thousands from all over the country and the globe came together once more to remember, honor, and continue the work of the pioneers who paved the way.

When the lights go off.

I decided to come back to Selma after everyone else had left. I wanted to see what Selma was like when there wasn’t an historical anniversary taking place.

On an early Saturday morning, I got in may car and arrived in Selma about 45 min later. My plan was to go beyond the bridge, behind the scenes, into the real Selma. I did not know what to expect, but was hopeful that I would find something great. I never in my wildest dreams expected to not even make it a few blocks from the bridge before finding a city bursting with creativity.

I plan on making many more trips to Selma so that I can write about all that I found, but for now I’ll just leave you with this video and hopefully, a reignited love and curiosity about our neighboring sister.
